Some friends and I have begun work in earnest on an ambitious new project, and I invite you all to participate. We will be creating a new zine focusing on Hardcore/Punk, critical thinking, poetry/creative writing, and more. This zine will be titled Disastrous, and we are currently requesting submissions in two areas:

1. General: Write articles or essays, anecdotes about interesting experiences you have, thoughts on music or bands, criticism of the community/culture/scene you live in, anything you feel the need to write or feel could be shared or printed.

2. Response writing. Every issue, there will be a prompt given for submissions. This first issue, we are aslking that people respond to, "The First..." It can be any kind of writing, just run with it.

please email all correspondence related to this project to disastrous.zine @

From The Depths

The show last night was incredible.

We arrived at Bunk only to discover that the electricity was out. Two bands and a crowd of would-be-show-goers stood outside waiting to see if the show would even occur. I called a friend who was attending the show at CS13 and he spoke to the organizers there, who were more than happy to allow us to tack our show onto the end of theirs.

From the depths destroyed that room. it was an experience I rarely have in cincinnati to be at a hardcore show where the feeling of passion and community is more prominent than the scenester social club vibe that typically wins out.

As always, Paralyzer brought the rage. I fucking love that band.

Hardcore is a live medium; it doesn't lend itself to recordings willingly. A band will (almost) always show their true colors more in a live setting than on a record. A record will never be able to contain the fire and intensity of truly great bands. In this repect, I can only feel scornful pity for any one of you who missed from the depths' set (this goes double for the dipshits who sat outside smoking), you can listen to their cd, but you missed an awe inspiring performance.

you poor, miserable bastards.

thanks thanks thanks to From the depths for playing, paralyzer for making us proud, bunk (for trying!), and especially to Isaac and everyone else at CS13 for allowing this to take place at all. You are the shit. I love you.

antisocial nihilism

contrary to popular belief, being a punk does not require total scumfuck apathy. the two are actually kind of incompatible. just a reminder.

on a seperate note, the distro is being overhauled as we speak, and I hope to have a much wider selection of magazines, books, records, dvds and zines real soon.

sometimes cincinnati makes me want to punch someone.

food service poem #1, draft #1

calm like warm water
washes over me sometimes
staring into the cutting board
you screaming in my ear

time stretches out
like a spring
waiting for you to finish
telling me how I've ruined

then snaps back
you walk away to scowl
somewhere else
I smile quietly
how audacious
i think

you miserable bastard;
you seem to be aware
not even
that I'm holding
this knife
while you cut
me down

someday, I will bring
your insides

There's been a lot of conflict lately in cincinnati's punk scene over how best to deal with a small group of people ruining shows for everyone else and making the larger crowd uneasy and uncomfortable. I know I don't just speak for myself when I say that I'm tired of going to basement / living room / blue rock shows where I feel unwelcome and threatened by others there who have no other agenda than hurting people and laughing about it, calling us pussies and fags, turning our diy spaces into a battleground of macho bullshit vs. sanity. I hope those of us with some semblance of reason can come together on this and let all these motherfuckers know they're not welcome in our spaces as long as they continue to perpetuate this tension.

There's nothing wrong with drawing lines when people try to infiltrate cultures of resistance with nationalist, misogynistic, and pro-military bullshit. Our spaces should be a place for people to feel sheltered from the onslaught and hostility of the dominant culture, a place for us to help strengthen eachother's defenses against the poisoning of hierarchy. If we allow proponents of that same dominant culture free reign of our space, they will dominate it as they do all others, as is their stated desire and intent. If we refuse to defend ourselves, we will have nothing left but a perverted farce: fake diy, fake opposition, fake punk. I'll fucking die before I hand it over to them willingly.

you should read this, among many other things: FUCK YOU, HETERO.

NCTI Theft Prevention Course: Mandatory

Today, I had to sit through eight hours of "theft prevention" class as required by the terms of my probation. wow. We all had to discuss the theft offense we were charged with, etc. I learned so many interesting things. For instance, of the twenty-two people in the class, eight of the crimes committed were in some way Wal-Mart related. That's 36.36 %. Just over one third. I can't help but wonder just how much of the total theft committed in this area is at Wal-Mart.

I'm thinking of writing all this information, along with other writings, and hopefully additional articles, interviews and record reviews into a zine for local distribution here in cincinnati. let me know if you have any suggestions for content, or if you want to get your band reviewed.

Almost done...

Hey everyone, just thought I'd let you know the audio section of my distro is now listed completely at below-right, and the print section shouldn't be much longer. In the meantime (considering the trouble we've had here lately), you should read this article:

Marie Mason Benefit Wrap-Up

I've said it to many of you already, but I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who helped make the benefit on saturday a success. Thanks to T for hosting the show, thanks to Faith for helping the stragglers find their way, thanks to every single punk who helped spread the word about the show being relocated, and thanks to everyone in the bands, especially Paralyzer for donating money from their merch sales for marie. We ended up with over $250, not bad at all for a 3 band living-room show.

NO FUCKING THANKS WHATSOEVER to the Cincinnati Police Dept. for harassing us and attempting to shut down the benefit before we even had it. Eat my ass.

For anyone who doesn't know yet, this is why we had the show: FREE MARIE MASON

Keep it real, never talk to cops.

music: Gather - "Who Belongs"

new blog, new name, same old shit.
